HOUSTON (June 25, 2007) —StollerUSA announced today the results of a Texas A&M University study indicating that Root Power™, a product with growth-enhancing properties, can significantly reduce thrip infestations on onion crops while increasing yields.
Dr. T.X. Liu, professor at Texas A&M University in Weslaco, Texas, conducted the research. Liu found that the onions treated with Root Power for six weeks at one pint per acre per week demonstrated a 63 percent reduction in thrips over the control and was significantly more effective when compared to plants treated with methomyl, an insecticide.
Root Power increases the levels of auxin in the onion plant, bolstering its natural defense mechanism and protecting new leaf tissue from sucking insects like thrips.
As we move closer to the dry days of mid-summer, all plants, including onions, will begin to produce lower levels of auxin and become more susceptible to sucking insects like thrips,” said Jerry Stoller, president of StollerUSA. “Root Power will not only help protect your crop from sucking insects, it will also increase the yield and quality of your crop.”
In addition to thrip suppression, the plots treated with Root Power showed an increase in Jumbo-size onions of 250 bags per acre over the insecticide-treated plants. This translates to an increase in profit of $6,250 per acre based on market prices in Texas at the time of the research. As proven in this study, Root Power increases root and shoot growth, promotes bigger and more uniform bulbs, and increases the quality and total yield of a crop.
StollerUSA’s recommended Root Power application is one pint per acre by drip irrigation once a week until harvest in conjunction with an effective fertility program.
