HOUSTON (Jan. 10, 2005) — While California tomato
growers struggle to survive the recent storms that have ruined
this year’s crop, a new Crop Health therapy might be
the answer to a successful and abundant crop next year. Recent
studies conducted in California showed tomato plants irrigated
with Stoller® Crop Health therapy products produced 30
percent to 60 percent more marketable yield than plants in
control plots. The treated tomato plants also showed an increase
in plant and root vigor with twice the root mass and double
the stem diameter than the control plants.
The Woodland, Calif.
study, conducted by the independent research firm Beem Consulting,
included plots treated weekly
with Stoller Crop Health therapy products Root Feed™ and
the nutritional product Harvest More™ Urea Mate. Beem
studied root development, plant growth, yields, and crop
quality.
“The California tomato processing industry wants a
tomato crop that yields high tonnage, but more importantly,
they
want a crop that yields high solids and has uniform ripening,” said
Lance Beem, director of research for Beem Consulting. “With
an early establishment of a vigorous root system, tomato
plants are able to reach their full genetic potential throughout
the entire growing cycle of the crop. In this replicated
study, Stoller’s Crop Health therapy products produced
a higher overall yield in tonnage, and more red fruit and
solids compared to untreated plots.”
The recent study conducted by Beem Consulting
supports a 2003 Fresno study by Reed Kirkland of Bio
Research, which
showed that tomato plants treated with Crop Health therapy
products experienced a 45 percent to 95 percent increase
in production compared to the control group.
“Crop Health therapy products increase crop quality and yield by balancing
plant hormones throughout the growth cycle, so the plant can better withstand
stress caused by unfavorable weather and pests,” explained Jerry Stoller,
president of Stoller USA. “The products are the next generation in crop
production technology, building on the progress made through plant breeding,
nutrient management, and pesticide advances to help growers realize the crop’s
full genetic potential.”
