Heading off the White Mold Issue

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Last week Kip Cullers treated his soybean contest plot with Stoller’s FRAME. It’s part of his management strategy to get a jump on any white mold issues…before they take hold.  Using moisture and mist to keep the crops cool and comfortable has its downside…and one of those is that it makes the perfect breeding ground for white mold spores.

So far Kip has shared that he likes what he is seeing.  Check back for continued updates.

Seed treated with Bio-Forge performs for Minden growers.

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Things were very wet on our recent visit to Minden Nebraska. We stopped in to chat with Jim Jensen and Mike Jorgensen. Nice fellows who have got a nice neighborly “partnership” going. Not partnership in the legal sense…but partnership in the sense they are always thinking of ways to better their operation. They act as each other’s sounding board and really benefit from  their cummulative years of experience.

Mike planted soybean seed that was treated with Bio-Forge and saw great emergence and a solid stand. Despite the stressful winds, wet and even some hail. Digging up the plants we got to see some amazing nodulation…which Mike predicts will turn into enhanced yields. The  soybean plants from seed treated with Bio-Forge looked much better than the untreated seed.  Mike is going on his third season of incorporating Bio-Forge into his crop management program. He finds that it really helps his plants manage and endure the stress that mother nature throws at them.

Jim explained the benefits of Bio-Forge were seen in the plant–now when the plant is greener and the root mass is larger. But it is the end of the season at harvest when the significant bushel increase convinces him he has a sure thing.  Jim adds Bio-Forge right into his sprayer with the herbicides and fungicides. Application is easy and the results solid.   The one field was hit by hail and high winds while we were there.

So we went out to take a closer look. The leaves looked rough but Jim is confident that Bio-Forge will help the corn plants bounce back to a decent yield level.

We hope so. And we’ll be checking back with Mike and Jim to see how their season continues.

Thanks again to our hosts in Minden. It was pretty muddy. But it was great fun!

Meeting of the Minds

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Last week’s visit to Purdy and the Culler’s operation was very exciting. We were joined by Stoller’s R&D team–Dr. Albert Liptay and Dr. Ron Salzman as well as D r. Wayne Smith…plus NCSU researcher Dr. Ron Heiniger.  Soybean and corn plants were studied.  Challenges discussed and new field trials and strategies plotted.

Kips strategy on soybean seems to be working. One of the biggest challenges he is trying to address is excessive plant height.  With the use of Bio-Forge and other strategies– some would say pretty radical strategies– he has managed to achieve a shorter plant  with more branching and pods. Right now it looks like that will directly translate into more bushels.

The roots have continued to thrive and grow with ample new root shoots and hairs and impressive nodules for increased nitrogen efficiency.

On his contest corn plot it looks like the corn root mass shows more vigor and potential where the bio-forge has been used.

No doubt about it…new ideas and technologies keep the team pumped.  But Kip cautioned all–it is a total systems approach. It is not any one thing that is a “magic bullet” And what works for him may not work for others….every farm and environment has unique  elements that must be factored into your approach.

Lots of growing season left….so we’ll be watching the progress.

Heading to Purdy…..

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

We are heading out tomorrow to meet with Kip Cullers. Scattered storms predicted. But its suppose to be sunny when we explore the fields on Thursday.

Greg Hillyer from Progressive Farmer is going to join us there. So is Dr. Heiniger from NCSU.

Lots of interested folks trying to see how Bio-Forge and Stoller technology can work with Kip’s innovative crop management techniques to push yields to the next level. Stay tuned……
